Development and Validation of the Multidimensional Screening Scale in Play Therapy(MSSPT)
Lee Young-Ae

Abstract
This study aimed to develop and validate the Multidimensional Screening Scale in Play Therapy (MSSPT) for 4¢¦6 year old children with social-emotional problems. In Research 1, which was used for developing the scale itself, 120 items and 5 subscales were extracted through a review of the theoretical literature and content analysis for 170 play therapy sessions. The items were then reduced to 93 through content validity analysis undertaken by 5 professionals. The 93 items of the preliminary scale were then given to 200 play therapists and supervisors. After item analyses and exploratory factor analyses had been conducted, 28 items of 4 factors remained, and these constituted the final scale. The subscales of the final MSSPT are as follows; control of behavior, affect, stimulus processing, and expression. In particular, domain of language was excluded from factor analyses because of age-based quality issues. Therefore, items related to language constituted additional screening. In Research 2, this study verified the reliability and validity of the final scale, undertaken over 219 play therapy sessions. The estimates of confirmatory factor analysis provided a good fit to the data. The MSSPT had reasonable reliability, as were the correlations between the subscale and construct validity. The results for reliability, correlations between the subscales, and concurrent validity confirmed the reliability and validity of the MSSPT. The MSSPT will be most useful to play therapists when it comes to screening social-emotional problems amongst children. However, this study was limited to a small sampling of child clients for concurrent validity; therefore, the validation of the MSSP in a follow-up study may well be necessary.
